Founding Story

How the Racine Blues Society Is Taking Shape

The Racine Blues Society is taking shape the way the lake leaves its mark on the shoreline — through real moments that stay with you. Blues music has always carried memory, resilience, and lived experience. It turns hardship into expression and expression into connection.

A Moment on the Lakefront

While looking at the old Reef Lighthouse, it became clear that resilience had to be part of the Society’s foundation. Years of storms had stripped the structure down to its steel frame, just as they had torn at the shoreline across from Pershing Park. Both were pushed off their footing and changed by it, yet both remain standing. The lighthouse still shines. The shoreline still holds.

That kind of resilience is at the heart of the blues — people finding their way through things bigger than them and carrying on.

A Vision for Racine

From that mix — the music, the lighthouse, the shoreline — Racine needs a place where people can breathe, feel, and belong. A space where the shoreline’s story and the community’s story meet. A space where the history and future of blues music bring people together.

What begins as a single event will grow into something lasting.

Building With the Community

We’re shaping the mission, vision, and values with the people who matter — family, trusted colleagues, and those who understand stewardship. The Society is being built for Racine, and its ownership rests with the community, not with any one person.

Our Direction

Our mission is to celebrate and share the heritage of blues music through free, inclusive experiences that invite people to enjoy, learn, and grow. Our vision is to build a cultural anchor on Racine’s lakefront — a place rooted in music, memory, and belonging for generations to come.
